Autumn Term

Key Information:

Children can wear P.E. kits on a Wednesday and Thursday

Homework will be given out on a Friday and collected in the following Wednesday. All instructions are provided in your child's homework book.

Spellings - Children will receive new spellings on a Monday to be tested on a Friday. In Year 6, we are using a phonics approach to learn our new words of the week.

Reading books - Children will choose their reading book from their class library, which is a set of age-appropriate and challenging reading books. It is expected that they read for at least 20 minutes a day. Children will also have the opportunity to borrow a book from the school library. Children should note all their reading in their reading journal.

English

Along with the rest of the school, we are spending the first two weeks

reading Flooded by Mariajo Illustrajo. We will be writing a diary entry,

telling the tale from the point of view of one of the animals.

Following this, we will be using the book Dragonology to then write our own

non-chronological report about our own 'invented' dragon. A key focus will

be developing our understanding of how grammar can help structure our

writing.

Maths

In maths, our first topic will be place value. Children will learn to read and write seven-digit numbers and understand the value of each digit. They will compare numbers and order them. Children will also explore partitioning of large numbers in different ways and examine why it is helpful to round numbers. Throughout our lessons, children will solve routine and non-routine problems involving larger numbers. Our next topic will be addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Children will continue to develop their confidence with algorithms. They will solve addition and subtraction multi-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why; solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and use estimation to check answers to calculations and determine, in the context of a problem, an appropriate degree of accuracy
